(Tibur) The Dicastry for the Doctrine of Faith, (more commonly called the Holy Inquisition) has issued subpoenas to Cardinals Louis Benedict Taft and Pablo Rodriguez. This likely stems from their attempts to rehabilitate the Infante Alfonso of Ebria, who is currently in custody for alleged war crimes during the recent Meridian conflicts. Originally excommunicated by Pope John Joseph for his behavior during the Ebrian Civil War, Cardinal Taft declared, without Papal approval, that he had given Alfonso absolution for his sins. Taft said this was sufficient for the wannabe dictator to rejoin the Universal Church. Cardinal Rodriguez used this to justify the Infante's now disgraced coronation during the ongoing Civil War, which Rodriguez presided over. Both men have been highly critical of Pope John Joseph's attempts to reform the Church.
A complicating factor in all of this is that the Holy Inquisition is still reeling from the fallout of the arrest of its former Prefect, Cardinal ZuanGiacomo Marcato. Marcato was a close ally and confidant of the Holy Father and has been charged with bribery, money laundering, and embezzlement. The Radilan native is currently under house arrest in his palazzo near Lake Cuomo. The newly appointed Prefect is a protégé of ZuanGiacomo's, Mother Mhàiri Cambell from Thaumantica, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing. She is the first woman to serve as Holy Inquisitor, something that both of the subpoenaed Cardinals had objected to.
